Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body uses up when you are asleep and is the minimum energy needed to sustain life. BMR is individual and influenced by factors such as age, weight, gender, activity, and environment. When BMR is multiplied to your activity level, you will get your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) or calories needed to maintain current weight.
Knowing your BMR will help you work out the calories needed to maintain or lose weight. To lose weight, it is usually recommended to create a calorie deficit of 500 calories through a combination of diet and exercise. But make sure to consult with a doctor first.
